Where’s Rep. Lynch on laser strikes endangering the neighbors of Boston Logan?

pilot blinded by laser JDA Aviation Technology Solutions

Below is a report that the FAA is investigating laser strikes on two flights as they landed at Boston’s Logan International Airport. It appears that someone has waged a campaign against the BOS flights by attempting to blind pilots in the cockpit. Goal = stopping flights? Goal = reducing noise? Impact = KILLING NEIGHBORS??

No doubt about it, the neighbors of Boston’s Logan International Airport are angry about the noise of the flights to and from New England’s largest airport and a facility which accounts for $13,359,865,000 economic impact on the region. Citizen complaints are evidence of the strength of their irritation.

The FAA has engaged in a lengthy and contentious process to respond to them; no option seems to be agreeable to any of the effected neighborhoods.1 Meetings and hearings have not been effective means for resolving the debate. U.S. Representative Stephen F. Lynch (MA-08) has frequently and vociferously complained about flight operations with FAA officials. His assertions frequently include claims of safety problems.

SAFETY ISSUES??? Consider the consequences of blinding pilots as they fly over the residential areas around Logan? A cockpit incapacitated by blindness trying to read altitude instruments? Trying to follow the GPS signal? Trying to line up with the runway? THAT’S A REAL SAFETY ISSUE!!!

Where is Rep. Lynch condemning these laser miscreants? Searches do not find any criticism of these attacks; no editorial calling on his constituents to cease such strikes against safety; no concern that a blinded crew might crash in his district!!! Is the Congressman so blinded by his vitriol that he fails to see these steps as appropriate for an elected official?2

FAA Investigates Two JetBlue Planes Hit by Green Lasers near Boston Airport

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is currently investigating TWO LASER STRIKE INCIDENTS INVOLVING JETBLUE PLANES NEAR BOSTON LOGAN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. These incidents occurred on Thursday morning, and the agency reported that the crews of JetBlue flights 494 and 972 experienced green laser illumination while landing at the airport.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported. However, it’s essential to note that pointing lasers at aircraft is not only a severe safety hazard but also a violation of federal law.

According to FlightAware, a flight tracking website, both flights were approaching the airport from the south over Norfolk County before turning north toward the runway. Flight 494 originated from Denver and landed at 5:50 a.m., while flight 972 arrived from San Jose and landed at 5:54 a.m on Sep. 21.

The FAA disclosed that it received 9,457 laser incident reports in 2022, a slight decrease from the record 9,723 reports in 2021. Since 2010, 287 pilots have reported injuries resulting from laser strikes. These incidents can temporarily blind or distract pilots, endangering everyone on board and on the ground.

Individuals caught shining lasers at aircraft may face fines of up to $11,000 per violation, along with potential criminal charges. The FAA strongly encourages witnesses of laser incidents to contact local law enforcement or call the FAA regional operations center at 1-844-359-6982.

At the time of reporting, JetBlue had not responded to requests for comments. The airline operates more than 100 daily flights from Boston to various destinations in the U.S., Caribbean, and Latin America.
