The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) is a most prestigious professional association of engineers and related disciplines which advances the science, technology and application thereof to aircraft and space vehicles. Annually a panel of recognized leaders in this field assesses the work of their peers and determines which aircraft design was the best. The 2012 winner for Aircraft Design was Michimasa Fujino, president and CEO of Honda Aircraft Company. The Greensboro, N.C. company designed and is manufacturing the HondaJet, which is an advanced light jet aircraft with class-leading performance, fuel efficiency, comfort and quality.
The panel found that Fujino’s Over-The-Wing Engine Mount (OTWEM) configuration reduces wave drag and increases drag divergence Mach number. Further, this unique design also improves cruise efficiency. The external OTWEM design does not intrude on the interior of the fuselage and thus maximizes passenger comfort.
Consistent with the AIAA’s goal of advancing the profession, Fujino contributed to the knowledge of others by sharing some of his analyses of theoretical design methods. In addition to his publication of scholarly papers, the designer has lectured on aircraft design and development at universities and industry conferences.Share this article:
