EASA’s Management Board re-elects Patrick Ky as the Agency’s Executive Director

Unanimous Vote

5 Year Term

Many Challenges

The Management Board of the European Aviation Safety Agency announces the re-election by a unanimous vote of Patrick Ky (50) as the Agency’s Executive Director for a second term of 5 years.

Patrick Ky declared: “It is an honour and privilege to have been entrusted with the inspiring role of leading EASA for the next 5 years. Later this year a new scope of activities for the Agency will be adopted by the EU. In parallel, the aviation industry is transforming at a faster pace than ever before. These are among the very exciting challenges that EASA will be faced with and that I am looking forward to take up with the support of the highly professional staff of the Agency”.

Pekka Henttu, Chairman of EASA’s Management Board commented: “The full support of all the Member States and the Commission indicates in Patrick’s re-election that EASA’s heading is the right one. Patrick is the best man for the job. He has demonstrated a great sense of leadership over the last 5 years to position EASA as the pivotal element of the European Aviation System. I look forward to continue {sic} working closely with him during the next 5 years”.

EASA was founded n 2002 and in fifteen years has grown to 800 aviation experts and administrators (EUROCRATs). It represents 32 countries (by 2019 will it be 31?). EASA has four overseas “embassies”—Washington, Montreal, Beijing and Singapore.

Previously, Ky headed the SESAR program, Europe’s ambitious ATM modernization program. “He also held different managerial positions in the French Civil Aviation Authority, in a consulting company, and in Eurocontrol. In 2004, he joined the European Commission to work on SESAR.

In 2013 Patrick Ky was the recipient of the The Glen A. Gilbert Memorial Award of the Air Traffic Controllers Association as a recognition of his achievements in the field of aviation and for being an advocate of innovation and change in air traffic control. In 2015, he was designated “Industry Leader of the Year” by the German publication Fliegermagazin for his commitment to develop simpler, better and lighter rules for General Aviation.

In total, Patrick Ky has more than 24 years of work experience in Civil Aviation. A graduate from Ecole Polytechnique and the Civil Aviation Engineering School in France, Patrick Ky also holds degrees in economics from the University of Toulouse and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Patrick is married and the proud father of 3 sons. In his leisure time, he plays tennis and enjoys all types of mountain sports (ski, mountain bike, trekking).”

Many challenges, global ambitions, BREXIT and further consolidation of authority in Cologne will keep Mr. Ky busy for the next five years.
