Article: Aviation Industry Directors General Celebrate Outgoing ICAO Council President
The ICAO press release on the recognition is worth repeating for two reasons.

First and foremost, ICAO Council President, Roberto Kobeh González did an excellent job leading this august body, the importance of which was recently reinforced. Mr. González of Mexico (center in the above picture) over the past 7 years balanced the complex and sometimes competing agendas of ICAO’s members in a fair way. Ms. Gittens, ACI International’s Director General (2nd from left), summarized the work of the former Director General of Mexico’s ANSP as follows:

“Under his leadership, ICAO has consistently risen to the many challenges along our shared path and Mr. Kobeh has made invaluable inroads, not only advancing civil aviation for the benefit of communities worldwide, but also in bringing aviation’s many players around the same table with a renewed passion to work side-by-side, day-in and day-out.”

On January 1, 2014 the new President will be Dr. Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu of Nigeria (right in the above picture). He has impressive and extensive experience in aviation; he earned a PhD in Aeronautics and ran his home country’s economic regulatory authority. His knowledge of the problems of aviation safety also derive from Nigeria’s poor performance in this area and the ICAO USOAP indicates that the country’s operational competence is below the survey’s average level. Dr. Aliu understands the challenges of a nation that struggles in this sphere and will use that base to advance global criteria recognizing that some countries will struggle to meet them.

Good luck Dr. Aliu in leading the ICAO Council.
