Randy Tinseth, Vice President, Marketing for Boeing Commercial Airplanes, is the author of a very informative aviation blog. His most recent post details the future demand for cargo aircraft; the forecast includes new and converted vehicles.
The Boeing story highlights the delivery of the 50th B-747 conversion, which also is the 40th aircraft which was completed by Boeing partner TAECO.

In the case of the Boeing 747 the STC process, which can be a complex engineering exercise, included new cargo doors and reconfigured hull and stronger floors that required detailed stress analyses. In the case of Boeing and Airbus and other major aircraft manufacturers they are usually well staffed to support the STC process and requirements. Other vendors may not be similarly situated so it would be prudent to have experts supporting your STC project that are experts in the FAA’s rules, data requirements and processes.
