Reports from around the World
There have been a lot of recent, unrelated articles on the ADS-B systems implementation and installation. A search did not produce a global scorecard; so, here are the bits of information available:
- United States—
›Ali Bahrami, FAA Associate Administrator for Aviation Safety, stated that the FAA’s implementation of the ADS-S system is fully operational. He did so in response to a question from Peter DeFazio (D-Oregon), during a hearing on aviation safety before the U.S. House of Representatives Transportation and Infrastructure’s subcommittee on aviation.
As to users’ installation, and at the same hearing, Bahrami pointed the finger at” the airlines’ lack of needed onboard equipment, adding that their readiness for the coming 2020 mandate is “not where we would like it to be.”
>GAMA Chair, Wipaire president Chuck Wiplinger reported, at the General Aviation Manufacturers Association’s State of the Industry event, about the GA ADS-B installation:
“50,000 of the anticipated 100,000 aircraft in the U.S. that will need to comply with the 2020 ADS-B equipage mandate have now installed systems”
“shop availability has already begun to tighten for the remaining aircraft”.
“the business and general aviation segment, smaller aircraft—pistons and turboprops—are leading the way with nearly half already equipped…”
“business jets are still only in the 20 percent range”
“The rotorcraft segment, meanwhile, is lagging even further behind, with only 10 to 15 percent equipped.”

This is not a scorecard in the sense that these reports use different metrics. The FAA and GAMA data are comparable. The other nations provide variable measures, but on a qualitative basis, impressions can be formed.
