ARTICLE: FAA Is Taking Steps to Improve Data, but Challenges for Managing Safety Risks Remain

Dr. Dillingham has made a career and a reputation criticizing the FAA for any number of failures. The FAA has dedicated a team of its staff to try to address the GAO’s all-too-often well reasoned criticism. At yesterday’s Aviation Subcommittee’s hearing, Dr. Dillingham’s testimony was relatively mild; he found fault with the agency’s data collection as to runway excursions and ramp area problems. The substance of the complaint was that the FAA, in initiating new data collection programs, has not accumulated enough data to make it valid for predictions. That conclusion suggests to the reader of Dr. Dillingham’s past criticisms of FAA that the agency is getting better.
