ARTICLE: Airline Safety System Comes to Helicopter Sector

050713a

The FAA announced that it plans to extend its incredibly successful Aviation Safety Information Analysis and Sharing (ASIAS) to the helicopter sector. The article provides convincing examples of the ASIAS’ impact on the commercial airline industry.

It is anticipated that the first focus would be the Gulf of Mexico where there is a high level of operations. Also, the aircraft flown are already equipped to produce the data streams on which ASIAS depends.

The FAA, International Helicopter Safety Team (IHST), and HAI will likely then target the Emergency Medical Services segment of the business. That industry provides critically important flights under demanding conditions.

NTSB Member Sumwalt is spot on when he says, the data is the initial step, but analysis, recommendations and actions are necessary to make real safety advances.
