This AOPA story emphasizes how much aircraft innovation comes from the General Aviation industry segment. Chip Yates of the Flight of the Century Project has claimed a speed record of 202 miles per hour for an electric powered aircraft on a flight from Inyokern, CA.

When you consider that the 1903 Wright Flyer was really a GA plane, the innovation that comes from GA is impressive. Burt Rutan, who designed the Long Ez pictured above, also was the fountain head of new design concepts and new materials. The project, identified in the AOPA piece, just may transcend to the design of future transport category airplanes. Stay tuned for more news about advances in aviation created by the GA industry.
