The President is a frequent flyer and recently named as Secretary of Transportation a young, promising Mayor from North Carolina. The speech of Secretary Foxx probably should have provided some insight into the Obama Administration’s priorities
In spite of such forewarning, it is extraordinarily disappointing that in a 7, 233 word address (including a number of “applause” insertions) there is no mention of aviation, safety, airlines, aircraft, air traffic control, NextGen, FAA or anything directly related to civil aviation (the speech includes one mention of “drone” in the context of its military use). That’s not a good indicator that this Administration will devote any attention to NextGen and the thorny issues associated with it (funding, equipage, governance, etc.).
Shame on Aviation! Maybe the President does not want to get out in front of an issue for which an industry cannot reach full consensus [see previous commentary beginning with the Omnibus Bill post ].
The President did mention
“President Obama laid out a bold vision for increasing opportunity for all Americans. The road to better opportunities can take many forms – a bridge that helps parents get home faster, a transit system that connects a community to new jobs, or a port that helps businesses sell to more markets – and we at the Department of Transportation look forward to doing our part to help connect all Americans to the 21st century economy.”
The contracts which will be authorized by a NextGen implementation plan will involve many, many high paying jobs and perhaps more significantly in the long term, will create efficiencies which will really stimulate the national economy. NextGen deserves to be a national priority.
Aviation’s infrastructure, which contribute so much to the GNP, must be recognized in the national agenda!Share this article:
