Turn to the guy on your right and the gal on your left. Read them this story and praise them for contributing to such an awesome safety year. Think about all that your team did to contribute to those numbers. Enumerate those special events when your team had a safety epiphany and cheer.
Then erase all of that from your white board and focus on the calamities which may occur next week. Look at the accident or incident that another operator had and that your company could have easily replicated.
Safety culture can and should celebrate its past numbers, but its future success depends on fear or at least deeply seeded concern. A drive that causes you to attack the unknown with intense scrutiny. Past performances create a baseline and your team’s determination must see the need to go from 99.99% to 99.999% however impossible that may seem.
