ARTICLE: White House extends aviation biofuel program

As noted previously, the Administration does not seem to give aviation programs a priority; high speed rail is more important than NextGen and more taxes on aviation are not a problem. Transportation Secretary LaHood and Agriculture Secretary Vilsack announced an extension of a research program to produce biofuels for commercial aviation by five years.

The key to the program success is to produce quantities adequate to drive the price down to an affordable level for the airlines. The biofuel is refined from inedible feedstock which provides algae.

Cleverly named “Farm to Fly” program is not without its critics. Fiscal conservatives point to the torrid development of this product after years of federal subsidies.

Let’s hope the proponents are right!
