Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), through its US representative (National Aeronautics Association), awarded Ed Bolen, President and CEO of NBAA, with its prestigious 2012 Charles Lindbergh General Aviation Diploma. The press release on this honor was an example of brevity:

The award is given for significant contributions to the progress and success of GA in either air sport or transportation, or in the work of international bodies concerned with GA. “[Ed] has had a major, positive impact on the world’s general aviation community for well over a decade and is a most worthy recipient of the Diploma.”

Ed’s biography provides more bases for the award. As the primary legislative aide to Senator Nancy Kassebaum, Ed was the Hill navigator for the passage of the General Aviation Revitalization Act of 1994, which reformed the judicial body of law which was strangling the general aviation manufacturing industry. From there, he was Ed Stimpson’s choice to succeed him as the leader of GAMA. Mr. Bolen was selected to assume the leadership of NBAA.

Bolen revitalized that lethargic organization and revised its image from the Fortune 500 organization to the NFIB of aviation associations (small companies located in every Congressional district). That strategic move prepared the organization to do battle with the FAA, the Administration, the Senate and ATA over the imposition of user fees on GA/BA aircraft. The battle is hardly over, but the aviation policy wonks had forecast a major victory over the general aviation coalition years ago.

Today, NBAA is an exemplary entrepreneurial association. It offers an attractive wide range of members’ services, has a technical staff that is recognized by the FAA for their expertise and advocacy, delivers messages to the media with impact through a 1st rate a PR organization, maintains a presence on the Hill which is among the best of aviation groups and holds an annual convention which is the largest civil aviation show and which is the envy of every other aviation association CEO. All of these elements were there when Ed arrived; all have grown since he assumed leadership.

FAI made an excellent choice for ITS Diploma for the above good reasons.
