Light Sport Aircraft is a category of aircraft which both creates new types of vehicles and allow certification under less strict rules . A similar initiative applies to all Part 23 airplanes. These are both exciting adventures into new regulatory approaches fostering new aviation innovation.
The LSA initiative is following/benefiting from the Part 23 evolution, as evidenced in the above- linked story and the FAA Notice . The new standards for approving a light sport aircraft are a product of ASTM International (formerly known as the American Society for Testing and Materials) Committee F37 work. The FAA reviewed these new criteria and then issued them as revised consensus standards and published them for public comment.
In terms of regulatory processes, that’s exciting!
