The job of an air traffic controller is all too often painted with a mythical color; F. Lee Bailey did a lot to create an aura about what they do and how they should be paid.
That said, their knowledge of the airspace, their comprehension of flight and their ability to communicate under stress cannot be overstated in the context of safety.
The ninth annual Archie League Medal of Safety Awards banquet recognized multiple examples of individuals who performed at the highest levels. AOPA’s Sarah Brown does a great job of relating the details of these “saves.”
