The FAA Acting Administrator spoke yesterday to ATCA and clearly sounded a clarion signal that sequestration is a real threat. This draconian budget axe was designed to compel Congress to come to hard decisions about cutting fat from many governmental programs.

It is important to distinguish the FAA from a number of (most) civil agencies. This entity OPERATES a business. Every day the US civil and military airspace REQUIRES that the centers, TRACONs and towers be staffed 24/7/365.  Every day and night, highly skilled technicians must MAINTAIN and REPAIR all of the equipment that allows the air traffic control system to operate. FAA inspectors, on a daily basis, exercise their SAFETY OVERSIGHT FUNCTIONS to assure that airlines, maintenance organizations, airports, pilots, schools, etc. meet the exacting standards.

There are other governmental bodies which have similar duties, but not all. Sequestration is intended to differentiate between and among federal services that are needed. The FAA meets that test intuitively; therefore –

CONGRESS SHOULD REMOVE THE FAA FROM THE SEQUESTRATION DEBATE!!!
