ARTICLE: CANSO mulls global safety audit

CANSO is an organization that represents 85% of the world’s Air Traffic Organizations. In the referenced article, that body suggests that it might audit the performance of the world’s navigation organizations. The International Civil Aviation organization’s USOAP already includes air navigation. Unless CANSO believes its review of its Members will be more objective than the UN’s assessment, it seems redundant.

In the same statement, CANSO proposes collecting and analyzing de-identified data in conjunction with ICAO. This effort would serve as the foundation for resolving issues and latent conditions worldwide before they become incidents and accidents. It provides a source for lessons learned, best practices and benchmarking. The sooner that CANSO and ICAO can start data sharing, the greater will be the likelihood that events will be avoided and safety will improve.

There exists several very good web-based safety reporting programs – one of which is SMS Pro – that is operational now and could be implemented to expedite the process worldwide.
