PRESS RELEASE: AOPA Launches ‘Rusty Pilots Initiative’
Program Designed To Help Lapsed Pilots Get Back In The Air
The new President of AOPA is moving his organization in ways which address two major policy themes in one initiative. The trade press has written about shrinking population of pilots; the costs of training and then flying are not diminishing. At the same time, the NTSB and the FAA have expressed great concerns about piloting skills.
The AOPA “Rusty Pilots Initiative” is an interesting response to both of these trends. Attracting fallow pilots back to currency is a wise method to increase the inventory of GA fliers at a minimum costs. The development of the training materials for the skills revitalization would be useful for Rusty Pilots as well as refining the skills of current pilots whose stick and rudder talents (avionics, weather, take-off/landing, etc.) may need improvement.
The AOPA initiative includes flight schools and flying clubs. The concept has depth and direction; it likely will pay dividends.
