The Company’s First Plant was a Shipyard

DAEDALUS, an effective SALES vehicle, no longer cost effective

The Boeing Company can trace its roots to William Boeing purchase of the Edward Heath’s shipyard on the Duwamish River in Seattle in 1910. Boeing’s initial purpose was to complete work on his yacht. Six years later the owner of this place to build boats decided to use this facility to construct airplanes. A wise decision for Boeing’s first aircraft was the Boeing Model 1 (also known as a B&W Seaplane).

The company, as Simple Flying explains below, bought the yacht Daedalus as an effective site for developing commercial relationships and a discrete vehicle for negotiating incredibly proprietary terms of contracts.

The  46.03m / 151′ Custom motor yacht motor yacht ‘Daedalus’ was built by Delta Marine in United States at their Seattle, WA shipyard , she was delivered to her owner in 1999 and last refitted in 2006. Previously named Affinity, her luxurious interior was designed by Jonathan Quinn Barnett.Daedalus controls


Daedalus’ interior configuration has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to 10 guests overnight in 5 cabins. She is also capable of carrying up to 7 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.


She is the second yacht out of Delta’s 140′-160′ full displacement hull mold for efficient, transoceanic yachts. Delta Design Group and Ron Holland’s collaboration on exterior styling has resulted in a purposeful solid FRP hulled yacht with subtle exterior lines. A visually arresting look was achieved as Affinity’s bow swoops into a sculptured “whale back” flowing effortlessly from her forward superstructure to perfectly proportioned long aft decks, including a ten foot fishing cockpit.


Daedalus features a displacement grp hull and grp superstructure, with teak decks. She was built to ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) classification society rules.


Powered by 2 Caterpillar (3508TA) 1,000hp diesel engines and propelled by her twin screw propellers Motor yacht Daedalus is capable of a top speed of 16 knots, and comfortably cruises at 12 knots. With her 66,350 litres fuel tanks she has a maximum range of 6,000 nautical miles at 12 knots. Her water tanks store around 9,450 litres of fresh water.

Boeing Sells Its $13m Superyacht, According To Reports

Boats and jets do not have a lot in common. One stays on the water, while others fly at 35,000 feet above the ground. Nevertheless, there are times where these two different forms of transportation cross paths. Boeing, which has a $13mn superyacht, is selling it, according to reports.


According to the Puget Sound Business Journal, Boeing’s corporate yacht has been sold for $13 million. Named Daedalus, the yacht is 23 years old and is blue and white. The yacht has reportedly been sold to a California developer.

According to, Daedalus is in a luxurious interior configuration. The onboard design has room for 10 guests overnight in five cabins. This is in addition to the seven crew members onboard the vessel. While the boat was built in 1997, it was delivered in 1999 and underwent a retrofit in 2006 with an interior designed by Jonathan Quinn Barnett. Undoubtedly, the inside is highly luxurious to give corporate executives a great experience.

Why does Boeing have a yacht?

Boeing, known for its aircraft lines that begin with the number seven, uses this yacht for a very specific purpose: entertaining customers. While Boeing is a big innovator, it is also an aggressive sales organization with customers worldwide. However, getting all of those customers is not always easy, and that is where this yacht comes in.

Airline executives who are negotiating purchase prices or examining aircraft like to be wooed. In addition to the best deals, airlines also expect a relationship with the aircraft manufacturer to support smooth operations with their planes. As such, a yacht getaway while entertaining key airline executives for a couple of days in the Seattle and Puget-sound area sounds like a great idea to pamper the airline team and give them a chance to take a mini-vacation while on business.

In addition, the yacht also serves as a secondary place to be isolated and conduct business. Lots of airlines like to keep their discussions with aircraft manufacturers private. Aircraft manufacturers also like to keep details, such as purchase prices, which can materially differ from one airline to the next based on things like customer loyalty, the size of the order, and others, secret.

Why is Boeing selling the yacht?

There is no official reason out yet why Boeing sold the yacht, but it is likely for a few different reasons. The boat is getting a little old, and, with the ongoing global health crisis, airline teams are not really looking to travel abroad and go on a yacht trip while mulling a major plane order.
