HAI President’s Message: We Get No Respect

Matt Zucaro, President of HAIMatt Zucaro, president of HAI, makes a strong statement about unwarranted Congressional interference in the FAA’s safety and environmental affairs. Helicopters provide incredibly valuable services to the public through any number of operations for which their flight characteristics are uniquely designed. Yes, there are occasions when a rotorcraft may deviate from appropriate norms and there are a myriad of ways in which the FAA and other authorities can discipline. On the positive side of the ledger, every American knows of a situation in which the life of a friend or close relative was saved by the emergency operation of a helicopter.

Each of us as citizens has a responsibility to express his or her views to your elected officials. All too often, aviation professionals remain silent in expounding the virtues of our business. We KNOW that the NIMBYs, mentioned by Mr. Zucaro, are not shy in attacking aviation. Between now and November, you are sure to get more than a few telephone calls, emails or letters asking for your support in this year’s election. USE THAT OPPORTUNITY to remind your city council member, state legislator, US Senator or Presidential candidate that you are proud to be a part of aviation and that your vote for the candidate is meant to be a Constitutional expression of your priority for our business.

VOTE wisely.
