CONGRATULATIONS to the Association of Flight Attendants for reaching its 67th birthday. Your history is one of which your members should be proud. The press release recites with proper pride the many advances which AFA attained through collective bargaining and mentions that your representatives have become a voice on legislative and regulatory affairs.

The role of a flight attendant as a critical position in aviation safety cannot be understated. The absence of any mention of such contributions of AFA advocacy before the FAA and ICAO in this press release is disappointing.

There are many images of brave flight attendants using their expertise, training and courage in saving lives. Those actions merit the esteem in which their profession is held. The union leaders take those experiences and the insights provided by the members’ devotion to safety to create changes to FAA procedures, FAA required on-board equipment and company practices. The public is generally unaware of those AFA efforts.

An appropriate addendum to the AFA press release would be to collect a list of AFA’s safety contributions. Please use the comment block below to list initiatives taken by the AFA which resulted in significant safety accomplishments.

The opinions of cockpit crews, regulators, passengers and aviation safety professionals will add to the credibility of any list that is developed. In advance, thanks for your thoughts!

As a past Air Health, Safety, and Security Chair with AFA, I couldn’t be more proud of this Committee’s accomplishments. I learned and grew from my affiliation with them and wish them future success.

  2. As an ASA pilot, and 14 year volunteer for the Air Line Pilot Association, thank you for your valuable contributions to air safety. It is imperative that organizations like the AFA and ALPA maintain pro-active roles in advancing safety in all areas of our industry and professions. There is not a more important mission in our work environment than promoting safety for our customers and our fellow workers. Keeip up the excellent work!

  3. As a former Local Vice-President with ASA (now ExpressJet Airlines), I am very proud of the accomplishments of this Committee. Their initiatives provided an insight into many of the safety and health directives we, as Flight Attendants, now enjoy.
